London Transport 1278LD a Leyland Breakdown Tender restoration
Built on a Leyland PD3/1A chassis with bodywork by Man Egerton this breakdown tender was originally allocated in 1964 to Neasden Underground Depot along with 1279LD. Eventually LT realised that two such vehicles were not required at Neasden soChiswick Works replaced the LT Urgent sign on the cab roof with a standard yellow beacon. Two towing eyes were added, front and rear, and then it was allocated to Cricklewood bus garage.
1278LD eventually found itself used by a traveller family in Brigg
The Leyland O680 engine has completed just 30,000 miles over the sixty years of its existence. The engine runs quieter than the power steering pump which emits a loud hum. That is one of a number of relatively small jobs yet to be carried out by the volunteer restoration team.
We are now looking for a good home where is will be appreciated, Expressions of interest should be sent to barrycoward@gmail.com

A good British documentary about landing American aircraft on something we invented 😅
And 5 minutes before launch the Graff Spee has dropped an 11 inch shell onto the bridge 😮
Very similar front to the Albion Lowlander buses from the early 1960's.
hi there, i used to work for LT. i remember this parked outside Baker st station many years ago, it was a emergeny response vehicle, don't know why it did not go in to the museum when finished with, well done for bringing it back to life, great memories, i think it had a Leyland 0.600 engine,
Actually this one was allocated to Neasden Depot along with1279. Eventually it was decided that two vehicles atNeasden was one too many. 1278 went to Chiswick Works had the LT Urgent" sign removed and a single yellow beacon fitted. Two towing eyes were fitted and then it went to Cricklewood Bus Garage,
Well done knobhead parking where it says keep clear.. you deserved to have no car left..
What a glorious transformation!
Bring back British Rail
Great to see this footage. Now all part of history. Soon to be released on my channel is footage of the last train discharging coal at Ratcliffe and of course across the whole UK for power generation.
That brought back a few black and white memories especially the wash unit and the two old single decks tucked round the corner at Bognor (R.I.P.)
This is very much like the other film "The Way Ahead!" ¤
Pretty good video qualityfor early '90s. Thank you.
British Rail and NSE got their fair share of hate back in the day, but considering the low level of funding compared to other European countries it's nothing short of miraculous what they were able to pull of. Ironically, it's only since privatisation that state subsidies have risen to levels comparable to (or even higher than in) France, Germany, the Netherlands etc. Mind you, no country spends quite as much on rail as Switzerland and look how well their trains work. Conservatives get tired of hearing this, but yes, some things really are all about extra money/funding.
Agree Szell's conducting is phenominal. Curzon's playing however is tentative, nervy and a bit clattery. 4:25 is not a moment of greatness
1:47 is Uxbridge ?
Straßenbahn am Kolk Richtung Gathe?🤔 Das war mir auch neu, dass es die mal gab. Bis wohin fuhr sie?
I was brought up in Brentford. I'm 52. Went to Green dragon school. Went fishing there. Grand Union canal.
Such a creative period of time from the 70s right through until the late 90s and since then. Every bus looks the same, Wrightbus carrying on some weird traditions but I miss proper engines
The case from The Way Ahead

Fantastic video of a unique part of British railway history, I like some of those brand new Range Rovers on that flatbed train particularly! :D I was just wondering, would it be possible for me to use this footage as part of an upcoming documentary I'm creating about the history of the Class 73s?
A large portion of the section between Baker Street and Finchley Road has been edited out; as it didn't take 90 seconds between Baker Street and Finchley Road, it used to take 3 minutes
Yes there was nothing to see in that section
@@A60stock There was something to see, and it is the most interesting section of the Metropolitan Line in inner London; therefore this footage is crap.
Por favor
Discúlpeme, puede regalar en mi cumpleaños Lalo locomotora verde y 35 vagones 35028
I never really liked the A Stock because of the seating arrangement and type was reminiscent of national rail trains; I would have preferred if the seating arrangement was like that on the 1962 TS and with low backed seats so that they resembled rapid transit urban trains. However, I only liked the A Stock prior to it's refurbishment.
Great film thanks for posting shame those days are gone where i live the inland harbour at perth is being closed because they won't dredged it because of environmental reasons 😢
It makes you realise what a big shit hole Britain is now when you watch these movies.
Wow, Lincoln high street with white borders Never seen that before
A time when Britain led the world. Harold Wilson soon put a stop to that.
Still got very fond memories of Route 291; Ilford to Barking.
This is very similar to how we farm sheep on the outer islands in the Faroe Islands. Everything is done by hand.
I can sympathise with "Peter-Ustinov"-I was a "mama's-boy"-too !!-had my ass wiped till I was 25 !!--aaaaah-the memories !!
Crazy to think some of these people would have known other people born in the late 1700's
Beautiful, I grew up in between Ipswich and Norwich, near to Bungay. I hope to return some day but every time I am able to visit it has become more like the rest of the country. I sued to love fishing and swimming in the River Waveney which separates the north folk and the south folk (Norfolk and Suffolk).
A Bakerloo line 72mk2 recently returned back to the Northern line whilst it was temporarily covering for the track recording train due to faults with the recording equipment but only during engineering hours at night as the line has since updated to automatic train operation/CBTC and it does not allow incompatible trains to operate there during service hours with the 1995 stock running at the same time.
What colour was the livery? It looks absolutely grim in black and white!
Wonderful . Once upon a time we had a bus service that could take us anywhere
When Britain was British.
Happy Days, in my driving days for Southdown at Eastbourne, I drove many of those types of buses including coaches and the two executive coaches
Reminds me of my favourite town.
I am a big time history buff and wow😮! I loved watching it. I immediately subscribed and about to watch more.
0:13 What on earth is the guard doing in the front carriage...
The King's Head 1680 in Fulham London has closed after 344 years, It will now be converted into flats for the never-ending newcomers.
Great video
Remember the AEC coaches in the fifties; could count the engine revs at idle because it was so slow. The drivers then had to work very hard with no power steering, low engine power and poor braking ; I think a lot must have gone deaf prematurely.
I'm 51 and the 50's appeal to me so much more than the horrible times we live in now. Would love to have been aroubd back then.
I thought it was only doctors who wore white coats...?
I remember being able to walk among the stones at Stonehenge in 1977, but the next time I visited in 1991 you had to gaze at them from a few metres distance. Maybe if we had dressed better, things wouldn't have changed. 🙂
Fascinating old black and white film with interesting architecture and added narrated information. Very few cars too, which is a great bonus for the eyes.
How are these powered? Does the train draw power from the track or is there an internal battery? Looks cool
The tack is fed power from a bus line at prix every metre
